Vignettes

The window was open, and while he was performing his new piano piece for friends (his hands ignoring the middle register and spread strangely upon the bass and treble) he heard some laughter behind him. In the street a cart of wares had been overturned with a great crash. "Was that a diminishless overdominant 13th, Claude?" someone commented derisively, snorting. Despite his usual reserve Debussy stopped, turned around and growled, "Why, can you not listen to a chord you don't know the name of?"
